Graphics Guidelines
This graphic standards guide provides rules for the use of icons, text, images, and multimedia content to ensure visual consistency in advertising. It will help you create an engaging and optimal viewing experience for your readers.
Texts specification
A maximum of 100 words is allowed in an HTML ad.
If the text to be included is close to the maximum allowed, it should appear entirely on the screen, without using the scrolling-marquee interaction. On the other hand, if you need to prioritize the message, the "Touch" interaction, which allows the reader to access the text via a pop-up window, is recommended.
If your advertising message needs to be longer than 100 words, we recommend the XTRA product, which allows you to present a greater amount of information in the form of native content. Contact your ad representative to find out more.
Type size must be a minimum of 14pt or 19px in a 72ppi image. Otherwise, the texts become illegible on some tablet models.
If you're producing your visuals in Retina format, the font size must be at least 38 pixels (28 points) to guarantee optimum legibility in the final format.
Don't use fractions in your font size (e.g. 16.3456 points), as this will affect display quality.
Be careful with the use of reverse fonts and their contrast. To check the legibility of your ad, you can use this Contrast Finder tool →
Use normal thicknesses of the chosen typeface (do not use too-light or condensed versions).
Specify “Smooth” anti-aliasing in Photoshop preferences.
If you use a non-standard font, you can save it as an image in Photoshop.
Use
@font-face
CSS technology to add your desired font.
Learn more →If you add a font, only
.ttf
files are accepted. Other formats (e.g.,..woff
,.eot
) must be removed before delivering your materials. If you use a non-standard font, please note that its size will be included in the total size allowed for your ad.
Images
Image resolution must be 72 dpi (pixels per inch) or 28.346 ppc (pixels per centimeter) at 100% of their final format.
Consult the Retina image tab to optimize the display quality of your ads.
For improved display quality, we suggest providing your ad images in Retina format, which means at 200% of the final HTML ad format. (The final ad file will retain the standard dimensions with only the image dimensions doubled.)
Example for full screen:
Final HTML file: 980 x 670 px
Assets folder images: 1960 x 1340 px
Pay particular attention to the following points:
Minimum text size in Retina format: 38 pixels
Minimum icon size in Retina format: 80 pixels
Four image file formats are accepted: PNG
, GIF
, JPG
et SVG
.
Preferred uses:
PNG
is best for transparencyGIF
* for solid colorsJPG
for images and photosSVG
for vector graphics
* Animated GIF
formats can be included in your ad as long as the animation is manually triggered by the user through an interaction such as touch, swipe, etc. In regular La Presse+ formats, automatic triggers are not allowed for these animations.
When exporting your images or photos, please do not include the color profile. It increases the file size and is incompatible with the code used for digital tablets.
Use RGB color mode at 8-bit depth.
Use color space: sRGB IEC61966-2.1
For optimized image file size, select Export → Save for Web
Video
In all cases, the standard video playback icon should be used to start a video clip. When the image on which the icon is placed does not offer optimal contrast, we recommend using the playback icon with a gray circle underneath for better visibility.
View and download our iconography →When the video playback icon with a gray circle is used, its minimum size should be 80px (or 160px in Retina format).
The close video icon should be placed in the top right-hand corner of the video, with the exception of full-screen embedded videos.
When the autoplay option is used (only available with full-screen format), the video starts muted. The sound activation and deactivation icons should be positioned below the bottom right-hand corner of the video window so that the readers can control their activation.
IMPORTANT: the autoplay option is not available when the ad is edited with Hype software.
Choose a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
Three file formats are accepted :
.MP4
.M4V
.MOV
Specifications for optimal video rendering
Format: .mp4
/ 1080p
Bitrate: 3500 kbps
The video will play in an HTML5 player (any custom video players will be ignored).
The video player must always provide access to controls to pause/stop the video or enter full-screen mode.
Code permitted
<video width="320" height="240" controls></video>
Code not permitted
<video width="320" height="240" autoplay></video>
In the tablet version of La Presse+, when the reader activates an ad containing a video, the video is played within the ad surface and is not enlarged, unless the reader touches the button triggering full-screen mode.
If the button triggering video playback is positioned within a frame graphically delimited from the rest of the ad (representing, for example, a screen, TV, or tablet), the video should start playing within this frame, and the player can then switch to full-screen mode.
Video content must be in French. If the video is in English, French subtitles must be provided.
For your subtitles, use the
.VTT
format.
The content of the video must be in French. If the audio is English, French subtitles must be provided.
We recommend a maximum of 3 videos per ad, each with a maximum running time of 3 minutes.
Total video files uploaded to our FTP site for one ad must not exceed 500 Mb.
Video playback is in streaming mode; the video file is not part of the ad file. Playback is therefore unavailable in offline mode.
Your material will be hosted on a multimedia server managed by La Presse.
The video is not included in the total size of the ad.
Audios
The standard icons audio and pause must always be available for playback of an audio file.
Compatible audio format is
MP3
.MIDI
files are not accepted.Do not use the Autoplay function.
The audio player must always provide access to controls to pause/stop the audio clip.
You can customize the trigger for starting/stopping playback of your audio using graphical elements such as “Play” and “Stop” buttons. If you do this, we recommend masking the default HTML5 player display='none'
and using these methods:
Start audio clip:
document.getElementById('audio').play();
Stop audio clip:
document.getElementById('audio').pause();
As La Presse+ is available on several operating systems, it is unfortunately impossible to perfectly synchronize the playback of short audio files with a specific player action.
The maximum number of audio files per ad is 3.
The maximum run time of audio files is 2 minutes.
Audio clips shorter than 5 seconds that play when another interaction is triggered must be accompanied by an audio indicator, at about 30% opacity.
If the audio file size exceeds 50 KB, your material will be hosted on a multimedia server managed by La Presse, and the audio will not play if the tablet has no Internet connection.
Audio playback is in streaming mode; the audio is not part of the ad file. Playback is therefore unavailable in offline mode.
Audio clips are not included in the total ad size.
IMPORTANT: The Audio function of the Hype software is not compatible with the La Presse+ application.
